NEWS: 2010 Wild Rice Education Day and Annual Gathering more info
The mission of SORA is to integrate science, community and education for the conservation and sustainability of native wild rice ecosystems.
We strive to do this by:
- Facilitating harvester education and outreach
- Developing a formal network of communication serving harvesters, managers and others interested in wild rice
- Promoting wild rice conservation through education and facilitation of cooperative research
- Being a voice for wild rice on issues affecting habitat and harvesting
SORA was created through the involvement of both American Indian and non-native wild rice harvesters, wild rice enthusiasts and those involved in wild rice management issues across Minnesota and Wisconsin.
We invite anyone interested in the long term conservation of natural wild rice (Zizania palustris) and/or the traditional hand-harvest of wild rice to join their voices with ours.
SORA is not a member driven organization but a collaborative alliance working to build an understanding of our natural wild grain and the people who participate in the annual fall harvest of wild rice.
SORA is currently funded under a CAP grant from the National Forest Foundation. Please check back often as we are in the process of building both the collaborative and the website. Miigwech!
We invite you to join our list-serv mailing list, which is open to anyone interested in the conservation of wild rice.
Just send an email to . When you confirm your interest in joining the list, you will begin to receive updates from Save Our Rice Alliance.
We will continue to add information to our website, so please check back for more information, coming soon!
